Do you feel your teeth look too short and your smile is too gummy, or your gums cover too much of some teeth?

To correct this, your dentist can perform a crown lengthening procedure to remove gum tissue and expose more of the tooth.

If your tooth is broken below the gum line, decayed or has an insufficient structure for a restoration like a bridge or a crown, your dentist may also recommend crown lengthening to make a cosmetic or restorative procedure possible.

How long does the crown lengthening procedure take?

Most crown lengthening procedures are very straightforward, but the time it takes depends on the number of teeth that require treatment.

What about aftercare?

Following surgery, the treated area may be a little tender, swollen or sore. Over-the-counter painkillers and antibiotics can be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort and to prevent an infection from occurring.

Rest with your head elevated and limit physical activity for the first 24-hours post-surgery. For the first 4-5 hours post-surgery, we recommend placing an ice pack on your face in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling.

In most cases, recovery time is minimal, and you can resume your normal activities the day after surgery.
